“They say a writer’s first attempt at a book is usually autobiographical. Then the writer learns how to apply that emotion and experience to characters that aren’t themselves.”

it’s Stanislavsky-an. i went to a talk with Garth Risk Hallberg where he said something to the same effect.

Aha! I didn't know that came from Stanislavsky. Or Hallberg.

See! I'm not crazy!

an observation that resonates with me, for sure! they say “write what you know”, and for some people what they know is themselves.

eventually you know yourself well enough such that you can separate yourself into several “yous”.

I wouldn't normally do a rant, but I'm feeling p***** off by the lack of response to a legitimate question. I know people are busy but there are limits.....

I was told last week to go to the FHP website and submit my book for consideration. After reading the 'rules' about submitting, I queried with you the fact that my books are over your word count rule.

No reply, ok people are busy.

So next day used FHP's contact form to submit a polite question regarding the word count having been invited to submit the manuscript.

Six days later.... No Response.

So tell me why would I or anyone else submit their work to a publisher who cannot respond to a simple question. Not out of the blue, but after being invited to submit.

I wonder who the sharks are here?

Rant over!

Hi Edward. Thanks for your message. I do remember your question and appreciate the patience you have shown. We get hundreds of messages a day over here. Between the studios and publishing. Literally hundreds. I’m sorry your message fell through the cracks. Our team has a lot to process. Publishing moves very slowly. I’m fine with your book being over the word count. Thanks for submitting. Understand though that it might take several weeks or more to read through your submission, as there are sometimes a hundred submissions per month.

One of the points of this substack is that we can get to know people on a more personal level, and feel more connected. I can also talk about how we operate, and the challenges a publisher faces. Hopefully that helps explain why we aren’t able to respond to everyone right away. Again, thanks for your message.

Well, that was a waste of an hour or so of my life filling in your form, doing a new synopsis.

Thank you for submitting your synopsis to Future House Publishing. Unfortunately, this isn't quite what we're looking for. We wish you the best of luck finding a home for your novel.

I wonder why I bothered!

Hi Edward. It looks like you got an auto-response. I'll check with the submissions team and see if they know why that was.

Adam, thanks for responding. I fully understand that reading through the slush pile takes time, and with Covid everybody and their dog has written books. I can honestly say mine were started long before the lockdowns.

I would point out that book one has been entered for the Page Turner awards, which will announce winners etc, in September at earliest, so expect things to take time. I will submit the book and await your response regards Edward
