The first movie I ever worked on was Isaac Asimov’s I,Robot.
Sure, it was so different from the book, it made my science fiction-loving heart protest out loud. But it was a movie, and it was a job, and hey! I was working on a movie even loosely based on one of my favorite science fiction authors.
In it, robots have positronic brains, which gives them a very advanced AI that would pass any Turing test.
Sonny, the robot answers Will Smith’s question: Can a robot turn a canvas into a beautiful painting?
Now the answer is definitely yes…
An AI made this in Stable Diffusion. I gave it a simple prompt: “Half dome in the style of Monet, blue and yellow tint.”
So YES, detective Spooner, robots can turn canvases into beautiful paintings.
More importantly though, AI can create things like this:
Yes. That’s right. Batman as a Dinosaur. I whipped this up in a matter of seconds. I had to practice to get the right prompts, but I’d read this comic.
When I Got Scolded:
I asked ChatGPT to write a future dystopian science fiction novel for me. I wanted to see if I could get it to write anything good. It refused at first. So I requested it write it chapter by chapter and it was more agreeable. When I went to write the climax, where an AI construct of Karl Marx has gained so much influence in American society that he reforms the gulags, the AI refused to write the chapter.
And the discussion went on…
What are some good Science Fiction books about AI?
So for the present time, and I think for a very long time to come, humans still write the best books. I think we still have a leg up on those robot friends of ours.
I want to hear your recommendations. They don’t even have to be 3 Laws compliant. Give me your thoughts in the comments.
See you in the future,

And Another Thing…
Coming soon: More books!
We have a range of science fiction and fantasy titles coming your way very soon. Here’s one that I think you’ll love.
The books in the Ender’s game series after the first (Speaker for the Dead is #2) have an AI character named Jane who is constantly talking to Ender through an earpiece and is central to the plot. And the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons seriously explores advanced AI in the distant future where humanity has settled many worlds. The AI stuff also starts in the second book of the series, strangely. Two great views on AI though!
Why don't you try DAN? Not as a book recommendation, but as a less ethical version of ChatGPT. Maybe you'll get your chapter :)
